How Travco Helps NEOMED Students Optimize Mental Wellness

Behavioral Health
Students in the demanding field of medicine experience immense pressure. See how we’re helping NEOMED students succeed in their studies—and in life!

Pursuing a career in the health care field can be a breeding ground for stress. From preparing for major exams to managing anxiety around Match Week (when medical students learn the location/specialty for residency) to navigating a challenging curriculum, students can experience a plethora of mental health concerns. That’s why Travco Behavioral Health provides convenient access to on-campus counseling services for the students at Northeast Ohio Medical University(NEOMED).

Students might learn about the on-campus services we provide through beginning-of-year introductions. Or they might be referred by a NEOMED faculty member. Or they might hear about us through word of mouth. Regardless of how students find their way to the Travco counselors at NEOMED, we’re here to welcome them with an open door and open arms.

To help these future health care professionals succeed, Travco counselors play a crucial role in several key areas:

  1. Identifying/Treating Pre-existing Conditions: The Diathesis Stress Model suggests the combination of an individual’s predisposition to certain issues—like anxiety, depression and ADHD—as well as exposure to a stressful environment can cause these issues to surface and  become problematic. We provide evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy to help students effectively address these concerns.
  2. Managing Anxiety: We assist students in developing effective study habits, fostering a growth mindset, implementing coping skills and increasing resilience.
  3. Addressing Imposter Syndrome: Many high-achieving students experience feelings of inadequacy upon entering a competitive environment for advanced studies in health care. Our counselors work on improving self-image, clarifying values and reframing issues positively to combat imposter syndrome.
  4. Facilitating Processing and Healing: We provide support for a wide range of personal issues, including trauma, family conflicts, grief, substance use disorders, relationships, sexuality and spirituality.
  5. Coordinating Care: Travco counselors collaborate with NEOMED staff physicians, nurse practitioners and other providers to coordinate effective treatment. This integrated care model creates a team-based approach where mental health care and general medical care are offered in the same place. For example, some students might maximize treatment outcomes through both therapy and medication—and we help coordinate those interventions.
  6. Presenting Targeted Workshops: We offer on-campus workshops that emphasize a holistic approach to care. We frame the students’ engagement in mental health services as a proactive measure that optimizes wellness as well as performance.

Travco is honored and excited to play a vital role in the support system these future health care professionals need to succeed not only at NEOMED, but also in life beyond campus.
